Shiftazine has been away looking at what is out there in the world.

There is beauty and wit amongst the chaos and troubles.

Surely a wonderful indication that the human soul is capable of surviving

almost everything 

as long as there is a platform for art and creative thinking to exist.

The sea spits out many a piece of flotsam and jetsam. Remnants of others’ stories. 

Nothing but rubbish really. 

Or is it something? Something that has the potential to become a beautiful thing, things that are woven from the sea’s casts off.  

And how do they come to be? 

What eye sees them, what hand picks them up. 

Who possesses the sharp mind that can see the potential of this salty detritus?

Raise the Pink Lantern

Walking through the back streets of inner city Sydney, or for that matter any city, 

even when it’s too hot, too cold, too wet, too late, or too early, will result in a discovery or two 

that will bring delightful.

The street is full of spontaneous art.

Raise a pink lantern was found in a small parking spot come back yard one late afternoon.  

Clearly they were evidence of a celebration from the night before…these lanterns stayed firm to their role 

of supplying a sense of event, joy, fun.

Best thing I can say is…Look, look and look some more all around you, all the time.

A Red Brick Delight

I have always relished the look of the great Australian suburban house. 

I did not realise, until I had travelled to the outback of NSW and Queensland, that the houses, which fill our suburbs, with their terracotta red bricks and roof tiles, 

reflect precisely the colours of the outback, with its terracotta red soil and the ever present blue sky. 

I draw great delight from the way people love their houses and take such pride, and make such an effort in creating a sense of place and home.

The beauty that lives within this style of architecture and speaks to me, also speaks to a contemporary, engaging artist, Peter O’Doherty.

Peter creates memorable paintings based on the ubiquitous urban landscape, focusing primarily on red brick suburban houses and flats.  

I have always appreciated his vision and way he crafts the imagery of his subject matter. 

He is a recognized artist, with work being included in Sydney’s highly acclaimed Salon des Refusés.
