The art of the bearded tit

It is unusual that shiftazine would do a follow up article so soon after an initial article, but the Bearded Tit in Redfern Sydney 
has so many aspects to it that one article simply would not do.

The space used to be known as Legge Gallery and now it is known as the new bar in  town, the Bearded Tit. 

And while the type of business has changed slightly,it still provides Sydney artists with 

a wonderful venue to show their current work.

A Mystery Box

No one knows where the box or the stuff within, religious in theme, came from. 

The boys from Seasonal Concepts bought it at an auction with no background details.

It just spoke to them, so they put their hand up. 

The wax hands that hold the sets of rosary beads are all too realistic and really remind us

of the wonderful Australian sculptor Ron Mueck.

Its likely that the box was a part of Cahill’s Matador restaurant, 

which was located in the CBD of Sydney in the 1940s and 1950s.

The Cahill restaurants were the first restaurant chain in Australia. 

And these supplied anyone growing up in Sydney in the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s with

their first ‘going out’ experience.

Whatever the back story for this box and the collection within is, 

it is just a great thing or things.  

Something from Nothing

The sun came out the other day after a long, wet month. 

The shadows returned to the footpath. 

But something else was present upon the grey concrete...

a hot pink dot of paint that appeared about every metre along the slopping path. 

It was really nothing but it made shiftazine think it was actually something…

Something quiet beautiful.

Frank Gehry: Building A Blue Sky Thinking

Wandering around the Chinatown / UTS precinct of inner city Sydney,

Shiftazine stumbled upon a wondrous piece of architecture that made no logical sense

and for that reason, instantly feel in love with it!

After waxing lyrically to all about this GREAT new building, 

someone was kind enough to mention that it was built by Frank Gehry.

Well that would explain why it is so BRILLIANT then, wouldn’t it.

The building is a part of UTS, and it’s the best part of UTS.

Here is a paragraph taken from the UTS website in relation to the building:

Gehry Partners designs from the inside-out, meaning that the design of internal spaces must be developed before design of the building's exterior can start.

Colour and spice and all things nice

Use colour as you would spice.  Too much of a particular spice and all the other flavours found in that meal will just be swamped. 
Use spice in a restrained and yet brave way and you can make that ordinary meal something that people will be coming back for more.  
It is all in understanding the intensity of your ingredients.  
The palette in interiors needs to be the same as the palette in cooking...balanced and creative but not overwhelming. 
Simple.

The Bearded Tit comes to town. Could I have a drink with that etching, please?

The Bearded Tit flung opened its newly gold leafed door just last week on Regent Street  Redfern Sydney.

AND it is full of absolutely everything you can imagine including a bowtied stuffed rabbit, 

a  selection  of 1950s  awful art  prints,  the  rear  end  of  a  deer, half a caravan  attached to the  garden wall, a 1960s gas fireplace, etc, etc, etc.
